Overview
A significant part of the educational experience at St. John's Northwestern
Military Academy is captured in various aspects of cadet life. Cadet life is
the total scope of activities including social events both off and on campus,
competitive and intramural athletics, community service support, and residence
life programs that are both structured and unstructured. As a boarding school
with a very specific mission, the opportunity for a young man to interact with
his peers in both organized and unorganized activities is vital to his overall
development. At SJNMA we put considerable effort into developing a living and
learning environment that is safe, supportive, and enjoyable.
Residential Life
The military structure of the Academy is best represented in the residential
life of the cadet. Each cadet is part of a company of cadets asked to live as a
community under the direct supervision of the Resident Life staff.
During this experience students participate as part of a team in competition
with other companies for recognition as the superior company. Cadet leadership
is actively practiced in this environment and students develop strong bonds of
friendship and camaraderie as they live, work, and play together.
Activities
Various activities are provided in both structured and unstructured ways to
provide cadets with recreational outlets, social, and character development.
Each company is required to participate in a service learning project during
the course of the school year, and numerous opportunities are made available to
students to serve both their on-campus and local communities. Organized social
activities provide students with a chance to get off campus and enjoy typical
leisure pursuits. Athletic competitions of both the interscholastic and
intramural variety provide opportunity for students to develop their athletic
skills and are a physical outlet.
The commitment to develop a caring, safe and enjoyable environment for students
to live and learn is fundamental to the SJNMA program. Cadet life is a
combination of structured activities, organized recreational opportunities, and
supervised leisure time that fosters strong bonds of friendship, a sense of
community, and the promotion of teamwork as a tool of leadership and character.
