Unique Opportunities

Project Lead The Way (PLTW) is a science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) curriculum that encourages cadets to build critical thinking skills through project-based learning and engineering design. Cadets learn how to apply the concepts they learn in math and science classes to real world problems and use those concepts to create, design and build solutions using computer-aided design software, robotics, electricity and simple machines. Cadets learn how to work as individuals and to function as a part of a design team. As an added incentive, cadets may be eligible to earn college credit for successful completion of each course in the PLTW sequence.
The Aviation Science Program offers juniors and seniors the opportunity to earn their Private Pilot Certificate as a science elective with an honors option based on performance. Cadets who dedicate themselves to the program develop a higher level of responsibility and self-confidence as well as learn a skill they can use for recreation or a career in many different aviation related fields. The curriculum is taught by Federal Aviation Administration certified instructors and consists of ground school and flight training in single engine aircraft. Once a cadet has earned his certificate, he may continue training for additional ratings and endorsements, such as those needed for flight by instrument reference or for multi-engine aircraft.
The Scouting and Beyond Program features action, adventure and activities! Cadets have fun while building self-confidence, developing leadership skills and working as a team. Activities include whitewater rafting, backpacking, SCUBA lessons, caving, lifeguard instruction, canoeing, marksmanship, Boy Scout High Adventure, and more! 2015-2016 Schedule of Events
The SJNMA Marching Band, Pep Band and Concert Band are configurations of cadets from grades 7-12. The Marching Band has been in existence for many years and represents the Academy in several parades during the year. One of the biggest events for cadets is marching in the annual Chicago St. Patrick’s Day parade. The Concert Band performs three formal concerts each year and the Pep Band participates at home athletic events.
The Pipes and Drums of St. John's Northwestern Military Academy leads all formal military parades, performing concerts on and off campus, and competing successfully throughout the United States. The Pipes and Drums was founded in 1918 with the enrollment of the first piper at Northwestern Military & Naval Academy. The Clan Davidson tartan was adopted to honor the founding family and The Pipes and Drums became an integral part of academy identity over the many years to follow. In 1995, St. John’s Military Academy merged with Northwestern Military & Naval Academy to become St. John’s Northwestern Military Academy, and adopted the tartan and traditions of piping and drumming.
