SPC Fernando Vences enlisted in the U.S. Army in 2014. His military occupation specialty was Infantry and then he volunteered for an airborne assignment upon completion of his one station unit training post. After that, he received orders to Fort Richardson, Alaska, and was assigned to the 3-509th IN BN (ABN) 4/25 Brigade where he held many positions from RTO, SAW Gunner, CROWW Gunner, and Grenadier, and operated various heavy weapons as well as being a part of a heavy weapons company for an entire battalion. He was able to assist and deploy with a big operation, which he collaborated with Australian special forces as well as the Japanese jumpmasters. He was awarded two pairs of foreign jump wings from both Australia and Japan. After three years in Alaska, he re-enlisted for another two years and received orders to Fort Drum, New York. He was assigned to the 2-22 IN 1BCT 10th Mountain Division where he was a weapons squad team leader and led a machine gun team. He served as a team leader until he decided to leave and finish school. He moved to Wisconsin where he is finishing a criminal justice degree from Waukesha County Technical College. He is still in the Army National Guard serving under the 32nd MP Co. in Milwaukee and plans to stay in the military until he serves 20 years.
